"Read ---- MY FIRST YEAR AS A DAD" "What does it take to be a First Time Dad?"
What does it mean to have a child, to be a parent for the first time? Many first-time Dads have no idea what is about
to be unleashed into their well-ordered lives. To be sure your life will never be the
same again
If you are about to become a Dad for the first time, and have very little idea as to
effect it will have on your life, then you are no different to me. If you are
hoping that you can somehow pass the responsibility to someone else and just continue
on with your life, then you are no different to me. If you are wondering how you
will cope during these next few months, then you are no different to me
You see this new first baby has no instruction book, has no ability to do anything for itself,
has no way to properly communicate to you what its true feelings are and has no
ability to perform any function that you believe is so easy.
But dont despair I was like you, facing an uncertain future, not knowing if I would be up to the challenges, not sure
if I would be capable to make the kinds of decisions that I had never made before, and
totally unprepared for the kind of emotions that would help me to overcome any
challenges that were presented to me.
What is a hole in the heart? what is VSD? For me, it was a time of focus, a time of keeping it together, a time of a love I had no idea I possessed, a time of being able to accept things that previously would have been alien to me. It was a time of courage and yet a time of fear, it was a time of unfamiliarity and yet a time for recognising what I could do, it was a time of intense love, and yet having to perform many activities that I hated, it was a time of believing this was only a temporary situation, and yet understanding that I would acquire many more permanent qualities. So who am I? no one special, no one that you would recognise in the street, no one that has achieved anything special, like written a piece of music, or solved a centuries old problem, or even won anything in a competition. No, I am like you, an everyday kind of regular guy. A guy who was scared, uncertain, unsure and unclear as to what to do in any given situation. Just an ordinary guy, who was asked silently, to do some extra-ordinary things. So why the Book? Well I just decided to write down what had happened to me during the first year of my baby's life, why? because I couldn't find anything that related to a Dad, I couldnt see any literature or information that could help me. So I decided to do something for myself, write an account of what I had to do, so that I could be someone I could look back on and say 'yes I did that, I did achieve some remarkable things'. I hope you feel the same after reading this, that you can relate to it, that you can gain an insight into what it takes to get thru your first year as a Dad.
